JANIS AVOTINS
2016

Born in 1981.
Lives and works in Riga (Latvia).

Based on images from the Soviet press, ubiquitous and decisive in the 20th century then suddenly lifeless, the subtelty of his ghostly painting evokes the difficulty of perceiving
the real and confronting the betrayal of memory.
He graduated from National Academy of Arts of Latvia. Selected exhibitions include the Latvian National Museum of Riga in 2016, the Saatchi Gallery
of London in 2012, the Ludwig Forum of Aachen in 2008 and the Biennale
of Prague in 2005 & 2006. His work is part of Arhenberg (Paris), Olbricht (Berlin), Hort (New York), Rubell (Miami), and Joel Wachs (New York) collections.
He is represented by Ibid. (London, Los Angeles).

He is shortlisted for the fifth edition of the Jean-Francois Prat Prize (2016).
