{"id":1209,"date":"2019-03-14T23:43:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T22:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/prixjeanfrancoisprat.com\/?page_id=1209"},"modified":"2026-04-11T14:39:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T12:39:22","slug":"missions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/prixjeanfrancoisprat.com\/en\/missions\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MISSION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> To celebrate the memory of&nbsp;<strong>Jean-Francois Prat<\/strong>, who died on 26 March 2011, and who was a passionate art collector, the partners of the law firm&nbsp;<strong>Bredin Prat<\/strong> in Paris, which he co-founded, and his family, wanted to pay tribute to him by creating a contemporary art prize.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created in 2012,&nbsp;<strong>the Jean-Francois Prat Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;seeks to promote mainly contemporary painting and to support emerging artists of any nationality.<br>The&nbsp;<strong>Jean-Francois PRAT Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;is a program from&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bredinpratfoundation.org\">the Bredin Prat Foundation for contemporary art<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>The Jean-Francois Prat Prize<\/strong> consists of :<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> An award of \u20ac20,000 for the winner and \u20ac2,000 for each of the other two shortlisted artists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publication of a catalogue each year on the work of the three selected artists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A two-month exhibition of the works of the shortlisted artists in the firm\u2019s offices in Paris <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cocktail during which the Prize is presented, with guests from the Press, the Parisian art world and key business figures invited by the law firm<strong>&nbsp;Bredin Prat.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-_948941-2d .kt-block-spacer{height:50px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-_948941-2d .kt-divider{border-top-width:2px;border-top-color:#fe2061;width:100%;border-top-style:dotted;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-_948941-2d\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <strong>ARTISTIC COMMITTEE &amp; ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Jean-Francois Prat Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;is by invitation only. The Prize is&nbsp;not&nbsp;based on any call for proposals or open application for artists or art galleries to submit works.&nbsp;<br>Every year, a Selection Committee seeks out artists from around the world then contacts directly the shortlisted<br>artists and galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Selection Committee of the Prize includes specialists from different areas of the art world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric BONNET<\/strong>, art critic and independent curator<br>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric BRI\u00c8RE<\/strong>, executive director of the Bredin Prat Foundation for contemporary art<br>&#8211;<strong>\u00a0Ana\u00ebl PIGEAT<\/strong>, art critic, editor at large of The Art Newspaper France<br>&#8211;<strong>\u00a0Matthieu POIRIER, <\/strong>art historian and independent curator<br>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Marie-Aline PRAT<\/strong>, art historian and author of several books and articles on art<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jean-Francois Prat Prize&nbsp;thanks collector&nbsp;<strong>Herv\u00e9 ACKER&nbsp;<\/strong>(2012-2013), senior curator at the Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Art Moderne de Paris <strong>Odile BURLURAUX<\/strong> (2017-2025) and honorary museum director&nbsp;<strong>Juliette LAFFON&nbsp;<\/strong>(2012-2016), who contributed to the Selection Committee during many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Each January the Selection Committee presents an initial pre-selection of eight artists to the Bredin Prat partners, who are not art professionals and who issue their opinion. In February, the committee deliberates and decides on the three shortlisted artists for the year. The Jury then votes to select the winning artist.<br><\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-_b3a1ed-ce .kt-block-spacer{height:50px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-_b3a1ed-ce .kt-divider{border-top-width:2px;border-top-color:#bebebe;width:100%;border-top-style:dotted;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-_b3a1ed-ce\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JURY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThe members of the Jury for&nbsp;<strong>the Jean-Francois Prat Prize<\/strong>&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;&nbsp;the person chairing the Prize that year<br>&#8211; the partners of the law firm Bredin Prat<br>&#8211; the members of the Artistic Committee<br>&#8211; the former supporting curators for the artists from the two latest editions of the Prize<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, in the last week of June, in a plenary session \u201cin camera\u201d, the chairperson and the Jury hear three representatives from the art world (a curator, an art historian and an art critic) who present, defend and put into perspective the work of the artist they have chosen to support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jury then votes in a secret ballot for the winning artist. The Bredin Prat Foundation for Contemporary Art is a non-profit organization (legally, in French, a \u201cFonds de dotation\u201d), serving the general public interest, with the aim of supporting, promoting, and developing all forms of contemporary artistic creation, as well as artistic heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main objectives of the Foundation are: <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To discover and support emerging artists from around the globe through the Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Prat Prize, which encourages contemporary painting every year <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To build an international contemporary art collection based on bidimensional works (paintings and photos) and open it to the general public.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation\u2019s collection focuses on \u201cwhat makes a picture\u201d:&nbsp;<strong>paintings and photographic works<\/strong>. It mainly supports contemporary painting and, to a slightly lesser degree, photographic works, notably art photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection is&nbsp;<strong>international<\/strong>: it allows artists of different nationalities to interact and familiarize themselves with the specificities of the French art scene and to exhibit their work in France; at the same time, it allows French artists to gain access to the international art scene. The collection therefore strengthens ties between the French and international art scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation acquires works of art directly, but also displays artworks on loan from its members, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bredin Prat Foundation&nbsp;seeks to reach a wide public by showing its collection for free, with guided tours at the premises of its headquarters at 53&nbsp;quai d\u2019Orsay in Paris by appointment four to six times a year, through online interactive access via its website, and through social media by presenting its latest acquisitions, exhibitions, and events. Its members work together to support and promote visual artists in France and abroad.
